Hospital helps Rescue Mission replace stolen computers
July 2010 - The Victor Valley Rescue Mission lost four computers during a burglary in June at its Victorville training center. When Victor Valley Community Hospital had to replace several computers due to an information system upgrade, the hospital donated the computers to the rescue mission. Finding a Home for the Homeless
June 2010 - The new Life Recovery Center is intended to eventually house 16 men whose lives need changing. While those who’ve spent time behind bars may be eligible for the program, Ron Wilson, director of the Rescue Mission who also lives near the new center with his own young children, said sex offenders or those who’ve been convicted of very violent crimes will not. “That is how comfortable I am, that I put it in my own neighborhood,” Wilson said. Poverty spreads to middle class
April 2010 - Veronica Trujillo said she sees more cars and nicer cars nowadays in the Victor Valley Rescue Mission parking lot during food and hot meal giveaways. Local food pantries and shelters are serving increasing number of recipients who had never sought such assistance before the recent recession. Read the Article (PDF)
Rescue Mission learning center hit by thieves
April 2010 - It was a devastating sight to the handful of men who returned home from church on Thursday night. After helping out at the Hesperia parish they returned to their Victorville home to find someone had broken into their home and stolen about $10,000 in computers, tools and software. What makes it harder is that this was also a learning center for Victorville’s Rescue Mission, said mission director Ron Wilson. Read the whole story (PDF)
Homeless Students increase by 50%
February 2010 - Countywide, the number of homeless students spiked nearly 50 percent between the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years, with more than 19,000 students now without a fixed and adequate place to sleep, according to figures provided by Brenda Dowdy, coordinator of the San Bernardino County Schools’ Homeless Education program. About 1,800 of those homeless students attend schools in the High Desert. Read more (PDF)
Volunteers Give a Day to Get a Day at Disneyland
February 2010 - About 180 volunteers have completed their requirements to receive Disney tickets working for Victor Valley Rescue Mission, which offers them opportunities to raise money at thrift stores and give out food and blankets to homeless people. Read more (PDF)
The Community comes to the Rescue for the Rescue Mission Toy Give-Away
December 2009 - On Dec 18, the staff of the mission was worried. There were only 200 toys for their toy give-away on Dec 23, and 1,000 children were expected. (Read Dec 18 article) On Monday morning, the toys began pouring in as the community rose to meet the need. (Read Dec 22 article) On Wednesday, over 4,000 toys were ready for the more than 2,500 children that showed up to the event. (See the news video)
Despite Tough Times, Many Give Thanks
November 2009 - The mission sees more families than anything else, with single moms and recently out-of-work parents showing up in increasing numbers. “We’ve been struggling,” Jaramillo acknowledged, as he had Thanksgiving dinner with his wife and two of their three children at Victor Valley Rescue Mission. October 2009 - Highlights from our Community Appreciation Banquet. Over 200 guests showed up to enjoy a great meal and moving stories of changed lives.
