SOS Hauls 7,705 pounds of Food
by Powell, Mel (Rotarian) May 2010 - Sherman Oaks Sunset Rotarians provided the hard labor to help the Valley Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers on 8 May 2010 as part of the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. Asked how best the Club could help, Food Bank director Will Hernandez gathered volunteers at the Studio City Post Office on Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Most wearing bright blue Rotarians at Work T-shirts, Club members descended on the Post Office's parking lot. Valley Food Bank was one of several local food banks to receive donations.
As the mail trucks came in at the end of the day, with food donations filling a handful of grocery bags or in several instances just about the entire mail truck, Rotarians pulled the food off of the Post Office vehicles and hauled it over to the Food Bank's large truck. There, the Food Bank's own Manny and Chaminade student volunteer Randi sorted and stacked the donations. The truck, which started the day empty except for the Food Bank's sorting bins, barely closed at the end of the afternoon.
Every letter carrier arrived with donated food and big smiles, and every Rotarian left with sore muscles and swelled hearts at seeing the generosity of the good people who live along these postal routes. The donations were collected voluntarily by the letter carriers nationwide, for the eighteenth year of this great program. Hernandez, who worked a successful Rotarians at Work Day in 2009 with Sherman Oaks Sunset, reported the next day that Valley Food Bank had collected 7,705 pounds of non-perishable food just at the Studio City location. "This is one of those times when I can honestly say that we could not have done this work without your team," he noted.
