Livingston Memorial Foundation Supports Homeless Health Issues

May 2009 - The Lighthouse Women & Children's Mission and Ventura County Rescue Mission received a $5,000 grant from the Livingston Memorial Foundation in support of their residential drug and alcohol recovery programs. The grant will help to support case management staff, purchase drug testing equipment and supplies, and provide public transportation for homeless men and women to community health services. “Promoting the health of homeless individuals needs to be approached on a variety of levels. Agencies must work outside the arena of traditional medical care provision to confront issues of poverty, housing policy, domestic violence, prevention and treatment of addiction, and other factors that contribute to homelessness. The Livingston Memorial Foundation’s continuing support will help us to achieve this,” says Carol Roberg, Director of the Ventura County Rescue Mission. The Livingston Memorial Foundation has been a faithful supporter of the organization for many years.

‘Tidal wave’ of homeless students hits schools

March 2009 - Daniel, his mother and five brothers, ages 1 to 17, live in a garage without heat or running water in a modest, low-lying neighborhood that sits between celebrity-owned mansions in the hills and the Pacific Ocean. Each morning, they arise at 6:30, get dressed and then leave quietly; they return only after dark — a routine born out of the fear that detection could mean the loss of even this humble dwelling.     Read article... (PDF)

Congress Renews IRA Rollover Provisions

November 2008 - The IRA charitable rollover was a tax incentive in effect in 2006 and 2007 that allowed individuals aged 70-1/2 and older to donateup to $100,000 per year from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Roth IRAs to public charities without having to count the distributions as taxable income. This provision was extended as part of the "bail-out" legislation for distributions made in 2008 and 2009.

Chamber Honors Oxnard's Best

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - “The Rescue Mission Alliance has been named the 2008 Service Organization of the Year. Starting out as the Oxnard Rescue Mission providing a small emergency shelter for homeless men, the organization has expanded to be the only year-round shelter for homeless men in the County.

In addition, the Rescue Mission offers a year-round facility for women and children operating as the Lighthouse Women and Children's Mission. Spend a little time at the Rescue Mission and you will be truly impressed with its operations. You may start with touring a clean, safe, and organized residential facility that annually provides 37,635 nights of shelter; 39,589 hot showers and shaves; and 27,413 articles of clothing. Or, taste one of the 237,095 first class meals prepared annually in a professional kitchen by students of their culinary school.

The management of the Rescue Mission should be applauded for its professional management, leadership, and compassion.”     - Oxnard Chamber of Commerce        Read the full story
